Kin selection in interactions between gametes: Gamete competition, gamete limitation, and sex allocation

چکیده
Kin selection on one hand, and gamete interactions in post-ejaculatory sexual the other are two major research themes that have risen to prominence over past half century simultaneously developed into central fields of evolutionary biology. There is a natural connection between two: when gametes interact with each other, very commonly many them originate from same parent thus siblings. For example, sperm competition will almost always involve sibling even if interacting parents not related other. If relatedness increases further. Here we discuss relation kin competition, limitation, local evolution sex allocation To illustrate these topics, present novel model simultaneous hermaphrodites under limitation limited, costly dispersal. We find can significantly increase male function, but limited dispersal (and increased relatedness) does alter regardless presence limitation.

Gamete evolution and sperm numbers: sperm competition versus sperm limitation.
Both gamete competition and gamete limitation can generate anisogamy from ancestral isogamy, and both sperm competition (SC) and sperm limitation (SL) can increase sperm numbers. Here, we compare the marginal benefits due to these two components at any given population level of sperm production using the risk and intensity models in sperm economics. We show quite generally for the intensity mod...
متن کاملLocal gamete competition explains sex allocation and fertilization strategies in the sea.
Within and across taxa, there is much variation in the mode of fertilization, that is, whether eggs and/or sperm are released or kept inside or on the surface of the parent's body. Although the evolutionary consequences of fertilization mode are far-reaching, transitions in the fertilization mode itself have largely escaped theoretical attention. Here we develop the first evolutionary model of ...

In the robustness analysis, we generated parameter values randomly for each trial. Here we present the range of values from which each parameter was chosen (table B1). We also justify our choice of ranges for scaling exponents. These exponents determine the allometric relationships between body size, population density, and pumping ability and between egg size and fertilization efficiency. Last...
متن کاملAntagonism between GLD-2 binding partners controls gamete sex.
Cytoplasmic polyadenylation is a key mechanism of gene control. In Caenorhabditis elegans, GLD-2 and GLD-3 provide the catalytic and RNA-binding subunits, respectively, of a major cytoplasmic poly(A) polymerase (PAP). Here, we identify RNP-8 as a second GLD-2 partner. RNP-8 binds GLD-2 and stimulates GLD-2 activity to form a functional PAP, much like GLD-3. Moreover, GLD-2/RNP-8 and GLD-2/GLD-3...

We have developed an assay for detecting the acrosome reaction in mouse sperm using chlortetracycline (CTC) as a fluorescent probe . Sperm known to be intact with nonreacted acrosomes show CTC fluorescence in the presence of Ca" over the anterior portion of the sperm head on the plasma membrane covering the acrosome . Sperm which have undergone the acrosome reaction do not show fluorescence on ...
